Back by popular demand after the sell-out sessions from last year’s conference our interactive simulation ‘Caught in the Middle of a Multiple Casualty Terrorist Attack…’ is back, bigger and bolder than ever before. We can’t tell you too much, but it’s promising to be an ‘explosive’ session!

This workshop is the ultimate training ground for encountering the issues you’re likely to confront when practising medicine in remote, under-equipped and extreme environments. You’ll need to think on your feet, have your wits about you and be prepared to practise medicine during an extremely realistic terrorist attack simulation.

You’ll start the session with a short talk on ‘The Evolving Terrorist Threat’ and what to do in the first crucial minutes to help keep yourself safe and be able to save the lives of others. In small groups you’ll then move onto our highly immersive workshop, where you’ll be given the opportunity to put your knowledge to the test and rise to the challenges of practising medicine in extreme and low resource environments!

While fully immersed in the simulation our experienced and highly trained pre-hospital emergency medical specialists will help you understand the sorts of issues – you’re likely to encounter and how best to effectively treat them on-site until the patient can be transferred to hospital.

By attending this unique workshop you’ll be taught the most effective, proven-in-the-field simple skills, techniques and knowledge to save lives in those critical first few minutes before the arrival of the emergency services on scene.

For remote medics and humanitarian aid workers working in remote areas, reliable transport is an essential part of any expedition. So, as part of our ‘Extreme Skills’ theme running across all 3 days of the conference, our extremely popular ‘Expeditionary Vehicle Maintenance’ workshops will return to WEM19, run by experts Russell Drew and Nick Cranfield. These sessions will offer a host of hands-on practical advice and top tips for any wannabe remote medic or aid worker travelling into challenging environments reliant on transport as an essential part of their expedition.

Our guest speakers Russell and Nick, who with 34 years of experience in expeditionary vehicle maintenance between them, will share their own experiences (the good, the bad and the ugly) of working in extreme locations across the globe. They’ll speak about the various scenarios that could jeopardise an expedition or field mission and how best to deal with those situations as well as passing on top tips for effective expeditionary vehicle maintenance – advice which could prove life-saving for you and your crew.
